With the budget coming up this week, I think we’re all looking forward (sort of!) to hearing the Government’s plans to support the economy and achieve some more stable economic growth.

But this has got me thinking…

I did some training courses for businesses back in the summer of 2009 – just after the start of the economic meltdown. At the events, I did a survey in which I asked all the business owners who came along (over 1,000 of them) what was the single biggest obstacle to their business growing in the next twelve months? One of the most popular answers was “the government”.

Eek!

Here’s the thing. All that is is an excuse. If you think, for one moment, that what goes on in Downing Street or the Houses of Parliament is more important in determining your success than what goes on in your house and your street, then you are deluded. We are, each of us, in control of our own destiny.

Another characteristic of super successful business owners is that they take responsibility. No mitigation or dilution. Whats happens in my business is all my fault. Good or bad.

In the 21st century with so much changing, if you want to achieve any level of success in business then this is a really important start point. 100% responsibility and the avoidance of excuses – even in your head (you don’t have to articulate them for them to begin affecting what happens!)
